Mayweather – Mosley Vol. 1: “The Moment” (writer’s notes)

…It’s what we’ve been waiting for.  Something worth the cost of PPV, worth the red-eye transit into McCarren International on the south strip… worth the “Ticket Master” price of admission and scalper increases… worth cheap suites at Monte Carlo, Twitpic bragging rights, and Saturday night table reservations at Tao!

This generation has been waiting for our “Leonard v. Hearns” moment, where 10 years from now we can turn to ESPN Classic and silently reminisce about the weekend we experienced sports history… even if it does come at the cost of on-the-spot losses at the blackjack table and over drafted checking accounts.  We want the: “Yeah, I was there,” or “I remember watching it LIVE” because there’s much more than just a belt on the line… much more than an undefeated record and a 10 year rivalry.  This fight has the potential to revive a sport that has consistently found itself at odds with the growing popularity of its Vegas counterpart: an MMA alternative that draws higher attendance numbers and has a distribution deal with network cable!

But beyond the fandamonium, this is the moment for Floyd Mayweather to solidify his unbelievably boisterous claim that he is not only the best fighter of this generation, but that he is the greatest fighter to ever wear vaseline… better than Ali, better than Sugar Ray (Robinson & Leonard), ”the Brown Bomber,” and all others who have paved his sure-fire route to the Hall-of-Fame.   This is the moment that Shane Mosley can move beyond this sort of second tier, executive suite level of super stardom.  As great a career as he’s had, he’s always been recognized as the #2/#3 guy in the division… He’s the Utah Jazz who would’ve won 2 rings if it weren’t for MJ’s Bulls, Atlanta Braves teams who won 10-times as many pennants as World Series Championships, Phil Mickelson who would be the biggest star in golf if it weren’t for a guy named Tiger… He’s great and he’s always been “right there”, but he’s never quite been the guy that draws fans to the gate.

Either way this is the moment… this is the time… AND MAN, THIS IS GONNA BIG!

  1. Floyd talking about himself being better than Ali is ridiculous! He’s good, but he’s never had a rival. Ali’s 3 fights w/ Frazier will eclypse Floyds whole Career! Negro Please!!

  2. I agree what you’re saying about Shane, he’s never quite been “the guy” in boxing, and I Think thats bothered him througout his career. Even though he beat De la Hoya, he still wasn’t the biggest name in the sport! Then, he lost twice to Winky, got crushed by Vernon Forest, and that’s the story of his career.

  3. This fight is gonna be bigger than floyd/pac-man. Shane is the fight that Floyd “has to take” to cement his legacy.

  4. What does it say if Floyd Dominates Shane? Not just wins, but beats him say 9 out of 12 rounds with 1 or 2 knock downs? If he does that, does Pacquiao really have a chance?

I”m not saying that will happen, but what if?

  5. If Ali fought in today’s media market, and against the slumming caliber of heavyweights in todays game, he would triple Floyd’s PPV output!! And Ray Robinson would be undefeated. He’s crazy.

  6. This post makes no sense! Shane is alot better than you’re giving him credit for, why are you on Floyd so hard? Get outta here

    • The blog seems pretty unbiased to me. I’m just saying, Shane hasn’t ever been the big name in the sport, b/c with every big win, followed an even bigger loss. Like somebody else said, he beat Oscar twice, but he also got destroyed by vernon forest and Winky Wright just made him look bad. He beat Margarito, but Cotto closed him out before that fight. He gets points for fighting everybody, something floyd WONT do.

  7. I think floyd makes too much out of being undefeated. if you dont put yourself in there w/ the best compitition, u will never get beat!

  8. Watching 24/7 helps you get a deeper perspective of how these guys feel. I know floyd’s in shape, but I haven’t really been impressed w/ his workouts! I looks like Shanes a bit sharper, but that’s video footage and they can make everything look good.

  9. They always say the guy on top gets to choose who he wants to fight. So while Shane was fighting everybody b/c he didn’t have much a choice, floyyd was hand picking boys 2 fight so he could make more moenny.

  10. Why does team mayweather keep pulling up stuff about shane and BALCO? Let it go man, stop tryina get in his head b/c thats not gonna work with him. Hes taking the drug test, just let it die.
